I attended the ACM Multimedia conference last week in Vancouver. Researchers from academia and industry got together and brained-stormed on what are the main areas of multimedia research for the coming years as summarized by Wolfgang Effelsberg and Nicolas Georganas:
4. Integrating virtual and real worlds
|
5. Developing ambient intelligence and pervasive/ubiquitous computing 6. Developing improved interfaces for mobile devices 7. Developing open-source platforms that Multimedia researchers can build on |
|
8. Basic indexing and retrieval, still not solved, like 'find apples in all my photos'
9. Developing easy-to-use telepresence systems
10. Developing new tools for testing Multimedia applications
I would add to these:
- Multimedia authoring: There are many tools exist but multimedia authoring is still not mainstream and content analysis, creation, and social annotation/commenting tools can be better integrated with user interfaces for authoring.
